The latest issue of The Lyme Report goes out to subscribers tomorrow and its focus is on Asian longhorned ticks and a whole bunch of really geeky stuff to do with Borrelia bacteria. In tomorrow’s issue, subscribers will find:
FEATURE: You can be forgiven if you’ve never heard of Asian longhorned ticks. We didn’t used to have to worry about them on this continent, but they’ve arrived in the US and are making their way up to Canada. In this article, I explain why Canadian public health researchers are so concerned about this exotic tick species.
ANALYSIS: I’ll be breaking down two recent papers looking at the nitty gritty of Borrelia burgdorferi bacteria. The first is a report from University of Calgary researchers engaged in uncovering the secrets of how an important mechanism allowing Lyme bacteria to evade a host’s immune system actually works. The second is a research article by a McMaster University biochemist who plunges into the debate over whether Lyme disease bacteria and relapsing fever bacteria, both of which are currently classified as Borrelia, should be split into two different genera.
NEWS BRIEFS: Dalhousie University’s Mini Medical School Program takes on Lyme disease.
